Volunteers

Volunteer flying is common for Nature Conservancy, and many other organizations.

Air ambulance flights use the Boulder Airport for quick access to the Community Hospital.

The Boulder airport is a staging area for both a Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) and a Helicopter to provide quick response to wildfires in the rugged mountain interface to the City of Boulder.  In a normal wild fire season in Boulder County approximately 100 fires are extinguished, most before they grow into major fires.

In 2001 the Rocky Mountain Interagency Helitack group was formed and for about 3 years Boulder had a crew based at 1V5.  Funding was through contributions and fees collected for the use of this resource but due to lack of money the program has been discontinued in 2005.

During the Wonderland Hills fire both the SEAT and Helicopter worked along with many fire departments to contain the fire and prevented any loss of homes.  One of our Friends of Boulder Airport members was personally on the top of the ridge early in the morning with a Sugar Loaf Fire engine and crew providing structure protection when both of these aircraft were dropping retardant on the fires nearby. read more
